Raised (2000)

My old PC recently crashed for the thousandth time and I decided enough was enough. As it happened, I had long since wanted to upgrade my modem to wireless anyway (for the Apple laptop) which meant a few changes. During the long, boring cleansing process I came across a few old 'gems' hidden in the darkest corners of my back up hard-drive, a place I would rarely go as it nearly always meant a restart which on the virus-riden Windows 98 would generally take atleast ten long, tedious minutes.... you get the picture! How it still remains in one piece is beyond me as I am not known for my patience OR anger management. Anyway, deep in the far corner of this dusty old.... etc... I found this video Bob K and I made for the song, 'Raised' and I figured I'd share it with you. It is nothing mind blowing but it is nevertheless home grown and for this reason, priceless. It has shots of my kids messing around, my old home studio and the much loved family Cocker Spaniel, Splodge, intercut with bits of live footage taken at the Grape Street Pub Philadelphia in 2000 with the infamous Andy Kravitz on drums. Andy co-wrote and produced the track. If you can be bothered to do the extremely long, laborious, frustrating... etc... download, I think you may find it interesting.

It's always exciting to find gems like these from the past, we will check it out later tonight.

You can always post these large QuickTime files in compressed format ie: .sit for the Mac and .Zip for the PC thus saving download time for your Blog visitors.

Just a suggestion :-)

Cheers to you,

Dave & Corie...

Hi Simon,

Hope things are well. Perhaps the lasts steps of that old PC weren't so glorious what with all the crashes but I hope it served well for its time.

Many thanks for this video. I for one prefer this kind of homemade style videos to the hi-tech, glitzy and sparkly ones of the type you see on MTV. A lot of them look like they forgot the human.

hey Simon
Great video, really love the feel of it! Splodge is so cute too!
Totally know what you mean about the computer, my old one crashed for the last time about a month ago and took all my work with it. Sure it wasn’t to do with the amount of times I hit/kicked the thing when it didn’t work though :P

The live bits in the video remind me...Do you have longer professionally shot video footage of your gigs over the years, or perhaps even videos of entire gigs? If so, have you considered compiling some sort of a live compilation DVD? I don't mean anything big and shiny but perhaps some kind of a limited edition thing with a homemade feel. This is not meant as idle flattery but you seem to be one of those artists who should be heard AND seen, since you have a great stage presence.

PS. I see the Messiah hasn't found his way here yet. Jesus Christ is doing the rounds in the blogs. Honestly.

I remember this phase quite well. I dropped in for a visit one afternoon at Andy's studio - you and I hit the Dunkin Donuts for coffee and complaining. Then Bob showed up and you mixed Raised. I actually took some digital video of that session which I am happy to burn out and send to you. I'll look around for the clips.

Download takes a long time. Called and you may have to go to 'windows' folder, open 'temporary internet files' folder then spend ages searching through all the web pages and previous downloads to find it. Or do a search!!! Or, clean cache (temporary disc space on drive C) and will make search a lot easier. Promise I'm not a computer geek... just happen to have had the same trouble when I tested the download.

There is a tremendous amount of truth in focusing on what is to be one's legacy. From one guitarist & songwriter to another, thanks for being profound at a critical time.

6:30 PM
Blogger JackJumpedOverTheMoon said...

Sue's daughter,

You will have to download the file onto your Mac and open it in a word processor. There you can delete the link that will open the file in (QuickTime I think it is) and it should play for you.

That is, if that is the problem you are having. It could be a million other things, but I'm willing to bet that's it.

What the heck is up with computers this week? Gone on strike?

7:05 PM
Blogger Dave & Corie said...

Use iMovie on your Mac to reduce the file size and save it as a .mov the same thing as QuickTime, it will make things easier for you in the future. If you can't get it to work I can do it for you and you can pull the finished clip off our server. Also note that your blog viewers will be able to view your clips in there web browser not as a download.

The easiest way to work reducing down the finished
size in iMovie which is an amazingly
powerful tool for the Mac other than Final Cut Pro
(the daddy of film editors) is to do the following

1). Using the import command import your film.

2). Drag it to the timeline. (this will drag the audio
and the video portions combined)

3). Export as a QuickTime film as format "web".

Alternatlively you can choose "Expert Settings" where
you can select a wide
variety of alternate formats both used on PCs and
Mac's alike.

Here are two examples of compression I created which are very
cool clips.

The first one is taken from a 380 mb file compressed
to 12.5mb
and that same file compressed to 4.5 mb both in
QuickTime .mov format

Cheers for now,

Just a word of advice...

When you go to download the file, right-click and hit 'save target as' then you can specify where to save the file and wont end up having to search Temp folders...

I'll download clip on my G4 and get back to you all. I'm sure it will work. Thanks for all the technical help and advice - much appreciated. And good luck to anyone having difficulty - if you really wanna see it, keep trying and you'll get there for sure.

Hey Neil - Ecstasy Heaven starts in regular E minor shape but tune down G to F sharp for the drone.

Hi Maria - cool idea. I intend to get loads of behind scenes footage this year and get a few more clips together - a DVD would be possible.

Hi Molly - Casbah Club recorded 'Raised' and it will be on the upcoming album.

Hi John - I am the primary writer but we are always working together developing my unfinished ideas. I think this year will see what we're all about as we already have an album in the can and are starting recording new material in a few weeks.

Hi Paul - sure did speak to Ian McNabb. We are going to keep in touch and hook up when paths cross.

Hey Seychelle - My bum? My arse! Mind you, now you've planted the seed...

Later everyone - back to bed for me, it's 4 in the morning and I couldn't sleep (YAWN!).

I have a question -- now that I have posted 3 songs from The John Sullivan Brigade up on IAC Radio, is there any chance you could take one of them and put it up on RADIO CASBAH?

We're really trying to make a big push here in the States and we'd appreciate any help. We'd even love to do a double bill with you here in the NYC area. Our last double bill was with Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze and that was a blast.

Any song of ours is fine...thanks.

One other thing...I've been going through your C.C. songs and if you decide you'd like to do some double bill shows in the area with us, I can leave my piano/keyboards up there and add my 88 keys to your songs. I don't have all the lyrics or the chord sheets in front of me now but I could do that for you. It actually sounds pretty cool.

Oh yeah, in my latest posts there is also a mention of Quadrophenia and what - "I Am the Sea" - and "Love Reign O'er Me" could be all about. I'd love to read your comment on that Simon!

This is a HUGE file, Simon. Yikes! I'm told it'll take 37 mins to download. Err.

And alright I'd love to wait around and stare at you staring down, but that's just not right. I am at work. Just there's ... other things ... I should be doing ... I really want to watch the 'old' movie. There's gems from the past to crop up now and again, and I'd love to be able to say something about your recent find...but I still need to wait.

Hi Simon

Thanks for saying Happy B'Day! May I ask when yours is?

BTW, how are rehearsals going to Casbah Club - I think you mentioned you were rehearsing around the end of the month?

As for The John Sullivan Brigade, the drums are all live drums -- no drum loops or things of that nature. Steve plays a vintage mix of Ludwig & Rogers kit dating back almost 40 years. It's as REAL and LIVE as you can possibly imagine.

'Bad Politician' is very Clash-like in its approach, while 'I Am Yours To Keep' is very groove-oriented (with some piano in the background). Our third song has no drums so you can pass on 'No Matter Where We Are' for now.

Hope to see us up on your station! Thanks for the consideration.

Hi Paul - Yep! Loads of new arrivals at myspace. Getting a bit crowded over there now.

Hi Paul(pool)- May call the album Venustraphobia as first planned. We are formulating plans for release schedule with manager. There is still recording to be done, loads of new songs which I'm really excited about.
I have never seen Ian McNabb live but I would like to. You know, I had a crazy idea that he would work in Casbah Club but I hear he is off on tour with Icicle Works this year.

Thanks for the Kody steer Lance... very interesting to hear a band influenced by oneself. Eerie but an honour!

Hi Steve H - My birthday is October 10th. We start rehearsing on 6th Feb - had to put it back to allow more time to record demos of new songs.

Hi Vendela! Nothing was shakin' until YOU got here! Good to see you on the blog!

Hi Neil - If I had to choose... my favourite Who album is Who's Next.

Thanks everyone for blogging me! I really appreciate the positive comments and vibes you're giving me and my music. Rock on!

Hi Si,

I'd love to hear you and Ian Mc together - I think it'd work.

He's doing some solo gigs in April and then the Icies tour is probably towards the end of the year - I'm sure your paths will cross at some point - if so, I wanna be there!!

Really looking forward to the CC album - I'm really getting into your stuff at the moment and I think Bruce's bass gives it even more punch - do you think he'll grow the mullet back??

You want to know what is so nice about you?
You don't have any of your links up. No IAC, No myspace. You are so cool. You know we can get there some how.

BTW, saw the movie over at Paul's. Wish my homemovies were done like that. Great job.
I do miss 8mm films, you could just wave, pretend you are talking, look embarassed that the camera is on, wave it away. Hard to be "candid" on video.

Peace out

I just bought 3 cds from your website, yeah!
I own a small restaurant/venue and trust me, they will be played often and hopefully will turn on many more folks to your wonderfull music.

I loved all your music from In the Attic, and am looking forward to the upcoming tour so I can see yall live.

Hey Si.. If Sullivan is going to lobby you, then I shall too.. Would love to see A View From The Churchyard added to RADIO CASBAH from my IAC page.. Drums are accoustic drum loops tracked using Ableton Live, not synthetic sounding at all. Sounds a bit like a Pretenders song. Hope you can reciprocate.

Funny you should bring that site up Lucky Buck.

I met Godfrey when the John Entwistle Band came to a local hotel/night club in Niagara Falls (dirty US side) back about the 1999-2000 time frame. It was just up the road from where I worked and I stopped in there to see if any tickets were still available. They were and I grabbed some. I saw John, Steve and Godfrey as they were at the bar. Had a nice chat with all.

You guys won't believe this (this is absolutely true!). I had a hilarious dream last night. I dreamt that I was at a John Entwistle show at the HSBC arena in Buffalo, NY. The stage was awesome. There was a HUGE and I mean HUGE spider above the stage and the spiders legs held the lights and was moving about during the show acting as spotlights, etc. Well John announced from the stage that he was telling the Who to go "F*&^ themselves" and was going out on his own for good. Just as he started on this death metal song, the Burger King guy (for Simon and the other "foreign" bloggers we have here, all football season we had Burger King commercials that had someone dressed up as the "Burger King" on a football field intercepting passes and running for a touchdown with this hideous music in the background )ran up on stage and stole one of Johns basses and ran off with it down the aisle in the crowd while the song kept playing.

I never laughed like that in years when I woke up. My elderly father heard me (at 3AM) and shouted in his Scottish brogue "THE HELL"S SO FUNNY??"

Oh man. Just too coincidental that posting came up.

FYI -- I Am Yours To Keep on IAC R&B (#22) is starting to move nicely, so that would be my choice for Radio Casbah. I think it fits best for your format. Hope all is well & have a good weekend.

I was at the Grape Street Pub that night. It was a little late for a work night but well worth it. That was a night of "firsts" with a band. A great show!!! Come back soon!!
