You tell me! I named the song after the album title, Bare Bodies Bare Assets - infact written nearly an entire year after the acoustic collection was released in 2000. The front cover shot was of a seedy XXX strip joint in Chicago so I went 'Half Nekkid' to continue the theme - music stripped down to its bare bones... an acoustic guitar and voice! I always wondered whether listeners thought I was singing 'Arses' instead of 'Assets', so when it was recently mistaken for 'Essence' I thought it may be a good compromise. What do you think?

Cover shot, is that? Not sure if I got it right. Reminds me of U2 with Achtung Baby actually. They were going to put a full frontal nekkid photo of Adam Clayton on the cover and call the album Adam. Would have been interested. Oh well. In the end they just included the photo in the montage in the inside cover of the booklet.

Hi. Loads of comments, some good, some bad(ish) and some funny. Good reaction to the blog. I'll post the bottom half next week ;-)

That Simont is really turned off. Who is he anyway?

Steve h was joking, thank gawd - he's one of the regular bloggers!

PaulB says to have fun replying to these comments, so I'm trying...

Miss Butterfly, your reaction confused me the most? Hope I didn't upset you... I know you're young but... it's only a bare body!

e.l.wisty - it's a back sleeve shot for an album stripped to bare essentials, an acoustic and voice.

Jim's right - the women started to cheer me up...

Ann - the question actually was (and I know you're kidding but here's a chance to reiterate) is the song best called Bare Assets or Bare Essence?

Seychelle - Thanks so much! The word!

Hi Sarah - I'm very hot!

Izy - Your accidental second visit made me laugh. Glad you like pic.

Bill - No, it's not seedy really! Bob often takes me there to help carry his bag (of toys) when he's working.

Jim - I DON'T FART! (much)

Hi Jack - Oh yes! Hatless at last. Glad you approve. And hits are rising as well as temperatures.

Ginab - that was brilliant! The essences of an arse's assets! Love it girl!

Hi Kelley - Hope you get plenty of support form my fellow bloggers!

Hi Molly - Being a ballerina I'm sure you are not phased by this at all - all those naked bodies backstage. Let's leave it at Half Nekkid Thursday... don't want to get me carried away.... by the web police.

Hi Gary - no sit-ups and no beer.

I would love to Lee Ann. I would love to.

Vendela - Meow! Woof!!! Love your blog pic - you have a great body!

Chris - I did eat a few dozen mince pies but just never seem to put on any weight.

Nice one Neil! You spotted my trickery.

Hi Alecia - I guess you're bias towards 'Essence'. Have to get a few more votes in.

Thanks Mike - And Ron, you were right about Buck... don't think he liked it :-(

Cheers James - I suppose I am, yes.

Marietta - Wallpaper? Don't forget royalties if you use my image ;-)

Paulblpool - Bald Ron Jeremy? I'm not bald! I'm bald... ing.

Sorry Buck - as I said earlier, a concept idea that needed to go as far as it did to make the point. Any further and it would have been porn.

Hi Kenny - There was a VHS live from Arlene's Grocery, NYC, I believe. Good to know you have the CD.

Elaine likes 'arses'.... by that, I mean the song lyric, I mean... oh damn! Sounds a bit rude doesn't it!

Hi Lin - I took the photo on timer, hence it being off centre.

Johanna votes for my bare assets and wants me to move the frame down a very optimisti 1 foot. Delbut pitches in with another optimistic request of 2 inches.... What do you think I am, a stud?

Justin - Can I borrow from your private collection? Ha!

Mark t - No secret - just don't eat.

You again Seychelle - Helloooo!

Hi Belinda - I love to leave a mark on your bare assets!

...and you again Sarah.... this is fun!

Thanks Kara - Glad you like pic.

Thanks everyone for 'bearing' with me - been fun!

Hi Simon,

Apologies if you have answered this elsewhere. Being new to your work, I'm a bit ignorant. Just popped Simontownshendis, which is truly a great collection, in the stereo. I was curious: where are the few live tracks from (venues, dates) - The Way It Is, Highness and Time The Healer? I couldn't see any information in the cd itself nor could find any immediately on the net.

Would definitely be fantastic if you decided to release a full-length live album "trad" on cd!

Put your clothes back on you dirty little ticket.

Just a query on the CC album which is already recorded - assuming the 5 tracks from the EP are going to be on it, are there any more of your existing tunes gonna be on there?

There's some fantastic stuff such as 'Flying' and 'This Is Our Time' but I would think it would be hard to re-create the vibe of those original recordings.

Simon, still listening to simontownsendis- track of the moment is soul searching, the hook is that bit ''theres a million ways....'' i love it i wondered, you know how songs grow on you? do you know a hook the minute you write it or does it have to gtow on you too?

9:49 AM

Hi Simon

Just wondering how often you meet up with Bruce and Mark when you're not actively gigging or recording. Do you have a regular rehearsal slot to work on new material etc?

1:35 PM
Blogger SimonT said...

Hi Buck -Zak played the slide guitar instrumental in the middle, about 2 bars long.... but it means a lot to me and the overall result. Wierd how such little things can make all the difference, eh! By the way, Zak is a wicked guitarist.

e.l.wisty - I've always wanted to release a 'Comes Alive' type live CD with all my best songs. You never know, may be doable this year sometime depending on the crowd reactions along the way. I think band live recordings are from Astoria show (whole gig available for free download on and Time The Healer is from House Of Blues, Boston. All around year 2000... I think.

Nice reaction from a princess! I'm very flattered.

Hi Paul - Flying may not make it on but Our Time is recorded and sounds great. I used the original track and just reworked bits of it. If you like that original version you will LOVE the new one.

Hi Natalie - I'll be there in the summer - for sure!

Hi Tausha - welcome to my world! Fancy a cuppa!

Know what you mean Belinda!

Sue - I have a mantra! Until Tomorrow, until the next time, until whenever, I'll wait forever!

Jessica - It's a 'hot-shot'!

Hi James - that IS the picture on the back of the album. I think you need to buy it, available at www.simontow...etc ;-)

Hi Neil - I guess you know pretty quickly if a hook is strong. I always think that if you write something and find yourself singing it a week later.... you're onto something. If you write something but can't remember how it goes the next day and have to get out the dictaphone to listen back... you're on a loser! Not always true but generally so.

Hi Steve H - Not really regular rehearsal slots but when we work we really do work. I spoke to them both today to arrange rehearsals for last week of Jan as we are recording in Feb. I am going to demo my rough ideas between now and then which we can develop together in rehearsal.

Thanks everyone else for the comments... some really funny stuff there as usual which I don't reply to but enjoy receiving. Stay in touch.

If not a full tab, perhaps just the tuning and basic chord progression.

I recently caught your performance at The Basement Jam, and I really thought your stripped-down version of TWII song in that setting was really spectacular.

I remember something your brother went something like:

"Why did God take all the hair off my head yet gave me huge genitals?"

It was something along those lines. Probably runs in the family... :)

Look at that - Tony's got No. 1 in the IAC "Misc" chart. It's really beautiful, just as the whole Shadowbird CD is!

Just now checking in after hiatus - comment #117. You clever man, you. A fine way to poll orientations and levels of interest. You are wearing a clean sock, of course.

Why am I not at the pub? Oh, that's right, because I have to go work on a Saturday night. :o(

Si, did your computer explode?

Going to the pub on a Saturday night.......what's the world coming to!

I had Paella and watched The Jerk!

Just spent ages responding and yet another crash! Bloody annoying as I've spent ages reinstalling system files, etc. To answer your question Sarah, it didn't explode... I did!

Alecia - I need a few more votes in, plus I want to record the song... I think its destiny will decide itself somehow.

Hi Steve - I think BW has a mailbox. I'll check and get back to you.

Bill - It's no rumour... bollocks have been rocked off! Yours are next mate!

Ron - info on Bisley hall gig and tickets will be on promoters website this week:

Whorocks - good point! Believe me though, I haven't changed a bit.

Joe - 'Way It Is' is in standard tuning. Song is played with one finger on one string throughout... except in the chorus' where I play basic A -B- E shapes. Very simple.

Yeah... come on you lot! Get over and sign Molly's ST fan map:

Hi John - checked out your blog. Looks cool. Will pop back and leave a message.

Hi Paul - looks like gigs start in April now. We are going to do some recording in the near future. Great film, The Jerk.

And to everyone else I am ignoring.... just trying to be mysterious ;-)

Sorry to confuse you... the "sock", usually worn by the guys in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers...used to be the only item of clothing. No other hidden meanings in the post. Maybe it is the fever.

Please don't be mysterious. I am catching a lot of sh**t for being here. My friends, well, they don't believe this is real life. So, if you could nod, wink or otherwise point yourself in my direction, I shall cease to be the brunt of every joke.

Hi Simon,
This is my first time here, since I've been commenting on your brother's blog, and I must say that this picture was a very nice surprise. I always wondered what you look like, and I must say that you are HOT! I'll definately come back.

Okay, Simon, you're hot and all, but you need a new post here. Enough with the almost nekkidness.

How 'bout some music or some more video of that amazing Townshend right hand?

Something to change the subject from, "What is he looking at?"

I can't say I enjoy that photo, Simon. I do await you at Hollywood Bowl in 2006...if that's the plan.

Question: Why isn't Any Way She Moves up on IAC?

I dig the feel. Fun. :)

Hi Jack - You are not the first person to ask that. I'm glad you like the song, it is a favourite of mine too. It will go up as soon as we've had sample clearance from EMI Music for the use of their published material.
